About Rob

“You can look at a picture for a week and never think of it again.

You can also look at a picture for a second and think of it all your life.” Joan Miró

This blog is my personal insight and observations on life and our planet.

I have been using a camera since 1975, which is also the time I started rock climbing. Wild experiences in wilder places often make excellent subjects for images. As time progressed my image interests expanded. The common thread is often people and location.

“For me, the subject of the picture is always more important than the picture.”  Diane Arbus

My working life has been eclectic, to say the least. Teacher; Climbing Instructor; Outdoor Educationalist; Management & Leadership Consultant; Tree Surgeon’s Assistant; Constructor of Ropes Courses. It has also been one of travel and experiences – All over Europe, USA, Canada, Pakistan, China, Japan, Thailand, New Zealand … and the locations continues to grow.

For periods I have worked as a professional photographer specialising in personal commissions for individuals or organisations requiring bespoke image work for their own needs. I continue to do so on an occasional, private, level. My other professional work has in included wedding, portrait and event photography. Whilst I enjoy ‘work photography’ my real passion involves causes, locations, environments and, most importantly, the people who live and work in places I know little about.

I’m, just very inquisitive, I guess!

“Above all, life for a photographer cannot be a matter of indifference”  Robert Frank

In 2007 I completed an MA in Photography (International Photojournalism, Documentary & Travel Photography). My final thesis and project work involved research and pragmatic application on the  ‘Veracity, Verisimilitude and Validity of Photographic Images related to Collaborative and Participative Practices’. The project was to create the book ‘Through Our Eyes’, a collaborative and participative body of photographic work and comments involving four young people from disadvantaged backgrounds in Mumbai, India.

Important to me is by living and working in my current environment I have a wonderful opportunity to make connections which are long lasting – not just in a moment that lasts 1/125th of a second. This is, and will continue to do so, have a profound effect on my future images.

“Most things in life are moments of pleasure and a lifetime of embarrassment;

photography is a moment of embarrassment and a lifetime of pleasure.”  Tony Benn

To finish this brief intro intro who I am, a few more quotes that have a resonance with me, or at least In the case of Ghandi, make me smile… and think!

“The whole point of taking pictures is so that you don’t have to explain things with words.”  Elliott Erwitt

“I believe in equality for everyone, except reporters and photographers.”  Mahatma Gandhi
