Down By The River
A wonderful river flows by the village of Aasrewadi. Draining the Sahyadri Hills west to Panvel Creek and on into Bombay itself.
This is also one of the cleanest stretches of inland water I know in this region. It provides a vital resourse for the locals – for washing cattle, washing clothes, washing pots or washing self. But it enables valuable irrigation for the land surrounding and a wonderful variety of crops, fruit and vegetables to be cultivated.
Then there is the spiritual importance. Every year all the local inhabitants take their revered idols of Ganesh (Ganpati) – the Elephant God – to be submerged in the waters. Candles light the banks and the monsoon rain often adds to a wonderful atmosphere.
